The District of Columbia has over 150 different boards and commissions.  These boards or commissions are independent bodies that provide important advisory, regulatory, policy-making services as part of the Government of the District of Columbia.  Members of boards and commissions provide an invaluable service to the District by advising the Mayor, the Council of the District of Columbia and the Citizens of the District on a variety of significant matters. Members are appointed to boards and commissions by the Mayor, and generally serve without compensation.  Members may be appointed to a board or commission by a direct appointment, or appointed through the nominations process whereby an appointment is confirmed by the Council of the District of Columbia.
